When is the best time to apply for a translation job?
In one sense, now. In another sense, when your skills are ready. Take your classes, get your degree, obtain your certification…do whatever you need to feel you can deliver a good product to your employer. Be aware that one never feels ready, especially at the start, and that some skills are gained on the job, so if you wait until you feel 100% comfortable you may never get there. At the same time, if you try to get work—as an employee and not as an intern—before you have a modicum of training, you may be disappointed. Or you may find a job, but then wash out when you can’t meet the demands that it is placing on you. So a good balance is necessary, which is why I say that when your skills are ready and you feel ready, then it’s time. The other answer, “now,” is because there is great demand for translators, due to ever-increasing globalization.
