What are the top 5 cities in the world to start and grow a new career in translation?
Interesting question. Assume you’re not working primarily over the internet as a freelancer, you want to be somewhere where there are many cultures and languages bumping up against each other, so that there will be a need for translation professionals. And you want to be in a culture that is open to other languages and that has a decent amount of immigration. You also want to be somewhere that has an actively growing, strong business economy. Now, one thing I can’t address is the regulatory and business climate in any part of the world other than the US, in terms of starting a new business. So you’ll need to take that into consideration. But, off the top of my head, I’d suggest, New York, London, San Francisco, Paris, Singapore, and Berlin. (No, I didn’t miscount. I just threw in an extra one for free.)
