Translators generally work with written language and not spoken. They are fluent in two languages and usually translate from a foreign language into their native language. Experience is very important when it comes to this line of work.
How much experience do you need to be a translator? You need as much as possible, and the more the better. Jobs in translation are few and experience may need to be gained by volunteering or practicing on your own. Education can also help you to gain experience. Training programs or bachelor degrees at universities can provide lots of experience.

Ability to work with the written word is another. Some may be better suited to interpretation which works with spoken words rather than written. Translating requires attention to detail and knowledge of grammar in both primary and secondary languages. Translation also requires knowledge of the industry for which translation is being done. Vocabulary for the specific industry will be very helpful. Knowledge of the customs and traditions of cultures is also helpful.
Experience actually translating is probably the most important qualification required. Practice is what makes perfect after all. Jobs in translation are rare and most likely; candidates in translation will have to find other ways of gaining experience. Volunteering is a great way to get experience. Plenty of companies and institutions need help translating their written documents from one language to another. You can also practice on your own. Translate everything you read to get a feel for it.

Training and school are a great way to get some experience and training in translation. Universities offer programs in translation that qualify you to begin translating professionally right away. Other training programs are offered at community or career colleges, or online. These programs last about six months and award certification in translation. Universities award bachelor degrees for four year programs. Each program is geared for different needs.
