Getting Started in Translation
Starting a translation career can be an overwhelming task for some. It all depends on how well one knows their second language. In order to start a translation career, one must have an excellent grasp of two languages, their native language and their second language. One must know all the nuances that go with both languages and be able to decipher the tone and meaning of words and then convey them another language. This can be a difficult task. It is not as easy as translating word for word. It requires one to know a lot about the culture and the different dialects of the language. Many translators are from bilingual families and they already use both languages interchangeably and this gives them a distinct advantage.
For those who are well versed in their second language, then the next step they will need to take to start a translation career, is to obtain some formal training in translation. Most recommend that one obtain a bachelor’s degree but there are several certificate programs available that can provide a good basis in translation principles and ethics. It may be that obtaining a certificate may make more sense and pursuing a bachelor degree can be done later on. Whatever one decides they need some education in the field so that they understand the concepts of the work.
Once a person has a good grasp of their second language and some training they may feel ready to take on anything, but most companies will require that one have some experience to start a translation career. This always seems like an awkward request for a person just starting out in a field, but there are ways one can gain experience. Internships are an excellent way to gather experience. Some internships may even pay some type of wages, which is an added bonus. Another way to get experience is by volunteering at an organization that uses translators. By volunteering you can generally set your own hours to work around your regular job, yet gain the experience you need to progress in your new job.
There are many opportunities available for those who decide to start a translation career. Translation is a growing field and that growth is expected to continue. Jobs are plentiful in the field and so it makes sense to look into starting a translation career to help you achieve your goals and find a good way to support your family.
