What Certification Tests for Translators Are Available?
Within this article we are going to discuss the three types of certification tests for translators that are available. Each type tests a different aspect of a translators knowledge base of industry best practices, ethics, and language ability.
3 Types of Certification Tests for Translators
- Multiple Choice: One type of test that is currently given is a traditional multiple choice or true and false type examination. This type of test is typically administered within a program such as the CTP Designation in combination with other types of testing procedures. Sometimes within a college type setting this may be the only type of test used.
- Essays: Most examinations are improved by adding some conceptual-based essays that must be answered to pass the examination. These typically make up 20-40% of the examination grade and test the participant on true understanding of the program materials instead of just memorization of lists, facts, and figures.
- Translation Passages: This is perhaps the most practical and challenging aspect of most translation examinations where participants are required to typically take a passage from one language and and translate it into another. Within programs such as the CTP participants are actually required to translate back and forth from one language into another and then back again. This ensures that they are able to translate in both directions in and out of the source language instead of in one single direction.
That being said, most translators can gain an edge within the industry by completing a translator certification program such as the Certified Translation Professional (CTP)
Designation.
