Online Translator Certification - Strengths & Weaknesses
This article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of online translator certification programs. While these programs are growing in popularity among translators they are not for everyone and a detailed review of their strengths and weaknesses can be helpful.
Weaknesses of internet-based translator certificate programs:
- Simply completing a certification in translation does not mean you are an expert or ready to work on any translation project for that language pair
- Some certifications force you to pay expensive ongoing membership dues, watch out for these and do your research upfront if ongoing payments are required
- There are only 3-4 globally accepted translator certificate programs, others may not be well enough known. Avoid these lessor known groups by conducting searches online to see which programs are being talked about everywhere
- Strengths of online translator certification programs:
- By completing such programs you get a combination of practical knowledge, translation best practices, and testing of your translation abilities
- If you complete an online program than you get your translation training fit in anywhere in the world, even if you work full time somewhere already
- You can quickly expand your resume and make it more closely related to the translation business very quickly by completing one of these programs
- Some programs will allow you to get certified as a professional translator with very little professional experience as long as you can complete their challenging examination online
That being said, most translators can gain an edge within the industry by completing a translator certification program such as the Certified Translation Professional (CTP)
Designation.
