Become a Certified Translator Without Traveling
It used to be the case that you could not become a certified translator unless you lived in certain cities or traveled to the few destinations where certification examinations were conducted. That is no longer the case, some translator certification programs such as the Certified Translation Professional (CTP) now allow you to complete programs entirely online.
While conducting research on this area look for these elements within any translation certification program that you consider joining:
- Video training modules that help you learn more about translation industry best practices
- Audio expert interviews with translators who have been in the industry for 5, 7, or 10+ years
- Study guides to help you complete the program without having to wander your way through the required readings all by yourself
- Career coaching and resume feedback so that you can use all of this knowledge to make meaningful progress within your career. Without knowing how to apply the knowledge to your specific career goals most translation training is only moderately beneficial
- Ongoing updates and continued education. If you are a professional translator the learning process and need for self-improvement never stops, you must continue to master your language and the culture behind it every year to a great degree if you want to keep on moving forward and providing more value to your clients.
That being said, most translators can gain an edge within the industry by completing a translator certification program such as the Certified Translation Professional (CTP)
Designation.
