What Do I Need To Become A Translator

Basically, anyone with exceptional knowledge in both source and target languages, and has creative writing skills, is disciplined and organized, enjoys reading and learning, and has a desirable communication ability can become a translator.

A formal academic qualification is desirable but not a requirement. However, to become a qualified or legal translator getting a professional translation certification and in some geographical regions licensing is mandatory.

  • You have over 24 months of experience either working or studying a language other than your native language;
  • You have lived abroad and you have the knowledge of both the source and target languages;
  • You are familiar with the language and also with the culture of the language being used;
  • You have the facility to speak and write a foreigner language.
There is not a single industry leading translation degree where you can graduate as a professional translator. What happens in most cases, is that someone becomes a translator by circumstance, usually through their current job or through the opportunity of living abroad and have found that translating is a good way to start as a new career and a great way to earn money on their own.
